As the title states pretty clearly, I am wondering if the Nikon F100 is compatible with the Nikon SB 28DX Shoe Mount Flash. I know that film SLRs use different flashes than DSLRs... why is there a difference (does it have something to do with the electronics of the camera)? Also, why is it called a 'shoe' mount flash?
I virtually know nothing about flashes... :) As far as camera gear goes, I'm a beginner.

Yes.
Your user manual will list compatible Nikon SB flashes.

The attachment point is called a shoe because the flashes "foot" slips into it.
